NotesSt. Cuthbert, Bishop of Lindisfarne (died 687) was the patron for the Gospel, and the scribe was Eadfrith, who himself became Bishop of Lindisfarne in May 698. Includes a 10th century word-for-word gloss in Old English, translated by Aldred, Provost of Chester-le-Street. Original cover lost during Viking raids on Lindisfarne and a replacement made in 1852. Removed from Lindisfarne to Durham Cathedral, and then to the ownership of Sir Robert Cotton in the early 17th century. Cotton's library went to the British Museum in the 18th century and then to the British Library.
